Understanding Knowledge Management in AEC Firms
In the rapidly evolving building industry, firms that prioritize knowledge management position themselves to respond effectively to changes, innovate solutions, and enhance project delivery.
Defining Knowledge Management
Knowledge management is the systematic process of identifying, capturing, and sharing knowledge so as to improve an organization's efficiency and competitive advantage.
Importance in Architecture
Knowledge management supports the architecture sector by enabling better project decisions, fostering innovation, and ensuring compliance with industry standards, ultimately leading to improved project delivery.
Benefits to Firms
Implementing effective knowledge management can lead to reduced redundancy, increased problem-solving capabilities, and enhanced collaboration across teams and disciplines.
About Me.
I’m Vanessa Gluckman, founder of The Knowledge Framework, specializing in knowledge management for architecture firms. With a background in Design Technology and BIM leadership at firms like Lionakis, Dreyfuss + Blackford Architecture, The Beck Group, and Moody Nolan, I’ve honed expertise in leveraging technology to streamline training and improve efficiency. My work focuses on creating scalable systems that centralize learning and foster continuous professional growth. I’m passionate about empowering organizations to optimize knowledge-sharing practices and thrive in a rapidly evolving industry.

In 2021 I became a BIM manager at Moody Nolan, the largest African American-owned architecture firm in the U.S. In this role, I developed and implemented a comprehensive training program for over 250+ Revit users across 12 office locations. This initiative included securing stakeholder buy-in for a significant training budget, establishing mandatory training for both new and existing employees, designing a curriculum that catered to varying skill levels, and implementing a Learning Management System (LMS) using Moodle. The integration of our in-house materials with external resources through the LMS significantly improved the efficiency of our professional development efforts.

I am also passionate about staying at the forefront of industry trends and best practices. My involvement in prestigious events like the BILT conference and Autodesk University (AU) has provided me with valuable insights into the challenges faced by architecture and engineering firms in implementing effective training and professional development programs. These insights have equipped me to guide The Knowledge Framework toward offering innovative solutions to meet the evolving needs of professionals in the Architecture and Engineering sector.
